Dr. Jerry in Tanzania

Did you know?

– For every 1,000 babies born, 39 children will die before reaching the age of five in Tanzania compared to only 4 in Australia1

– The number of women who die from childbirth per 100,000 live births in Tanzania is 276 compared to 2 in Australia1

– The life expectancy in Tanzania is 67 years old, 16 years less than the life expectancy in Australia1

– There is only 1 doctor per 10,000 people in Tanzania2

In the context of these significant gaps in health outcomes, Jerry will be volunteering as a doctor in Tanzania. Oasis Health, a local health centre in Dar es Salaam, has invited Jerry to work in partnership with them to provide quality medical services that meet the needs of the community. In particular, his focus will be to build the capacity of the local health centre through training and teaching of local healthcare workers.

Having worked across different settings as a rural GP obstetrician in Victoria and South Australia, Jerry will be drawing upon his experience as a rural generalist doctor and his skills in procedural obstetrics to provide much needed healthcare in a resource poor setting. Furthermore, after many years of experience teaching and supervising doctors-in-training in Australia, Jerry looks forward to coming alongside local Tanzanian healthcare professionals and training them in primary health care to make a sustainable impact.

Jerry and his young family are moving to Tanzania to volunteer and serve the community as an expression of their faith by being the “hands and feet” of Jesus to those in need. However they can only do so with the support of generous supporters who share this vision with them.
