When A Question Becomes The Reality

“If a mosque imam became a follower of Jesus and had four wives, what wise and biblical counsel could we offer him?”

It once felt like a distant, hypothetical question—one raised by our Praxeis leader serving in a majority non-Christian context in Southeast Asia as he trained others.

Someone suggested an extreme solution: keep only the oldest wife and divorce the other three in order to “fit” Christian expectations. But is that what Scripture truly calls us to—or simply what feels familiar within our own cultural lens?

Not long after, this question became real.

Recently, Brian met Yoni, a former village leader carrying a heavy burden. He was struggling in his relationships at home—and in his understanding of God. For reasons he couldn’t fully explain, Yoni felt safe enough to open his heart to Brian, even knowing he was a Christian.

As their conversations deepened, Brian began to understand more of Yoni’s world—including the reality of his three wives. Rather than rushing to offer solutions, Brian chose to listen. Trust began to grow. And in that space, it became clear: God was already at work in Yoni’s life.

Yoni showed signs of being a “person of peace”—someone God had prepared long before Brian arrived.

Today, Brian meets regularly with Yoni and several of his friends to read and discuss Scripture together through Discovery Bible Study (DBS). Because of Yoni’s respected position in the village, others are eager to join. Brian doesn’t push for quick decisions or outward conformity. Instead, he invites them into direct encounter with God’s Word.

And Yoni—already open, already searching—is learning to listen to God for himself.

This situation brings to mind Paul’s words:

“Each of you should continue to live in whatever situation the Lord has placed you, and remain as you were when God first called you. This is my rule for all the churches…The important thing is to keep God’s commandments.” (1 Corinthians 7:17, 19b)

What does obedience look like in a context so different from our own? How do we disciple in a way that is faithful to Scripture without imposing our culture?

These are not easy questions—but they are real ones.

Please pray for Brian as he walks alongside Yoni and this growing group. Pray that they will hear God clearly and become followers of Jesus who obey His commands. Pray that Yoni will continue to respond to God’s leading—impacting his village and, in time, multiplying what God has begun.

What started as a theoretical question has now become a daily reality.

Stories like Yoni’s remind us that God is already at work long before we arrive. He prepares hearts, opens doors, and draws people to Himself in ways we could never orchestrate. Our role is simply to listen, obey, and walk alongside those He brings to us—helping others follow Jesus in ways that are rooted in Scripture, not shaped by our culture.
